Shut up, gato

Ever since the friend that was staying with Edgar and I moved out with his cat, I think that Fiyero has been feeling lonely being in the apartment all day by himself. He's just not used to living alone anymore. When I first got him in October of 2006, I lived with roommates; pets outnumbered humans in the house, two cats and two dogs against three adults. Edgar moved in May of 2007 to finally even the score. So that was the life for Fiyero until September of 2007, when Edgar and I moved out into our own place. So the cat knows how to be alone. He had to find ways to amuse himself without the aid of others for well over a year, until December of 2008 when we had to move in with Edgar's parents.

Living with Grandma and Grandpa was a totally different experience. His dad might as well have built an altar in his honor and sacrificed mice at his feet what with all of the love and adoration that he gave that cat. His mom was home with him during the day once Edgar and I were back at work, and she would spend all day talking to him.

When we moved back out on our own in September of 2009, Fiyero had two months by himself again before our friend moved in to stay with us. Now after three months of having attention all day, he's back by himself, and HE IS PISSED. Every day when I get home he spends about ten minutes following me everywhere I go and meowing at the top of his lungs as if to say "YOU! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL DAY?! DO YOU KNOW HOW LONELY I AM WHEN I HAVE TO SLEEP ALL BY MYSELF?!" Because that's all he does during the day. Sleep. I've seen it. He spends all afternoon sleeping, regardless of whether anybody is home or not. Then he gets all riled up around 5:00, then spends the rest of the evening being all chilled out and cat-nappy, and then as soon as he sees you wash your face and pick up your toothbrush he's all THE CREEPY NEIGHBOR JUST GAVE ME CRACK AND I LIKED IT AND LET'S RUN AND PLAY AND JUMP AND MEOW!

So I don't understand why he's just so pissed off (because you can tell he's all pissed off) whenever we come home from work, because it's not like he did anything all day that required the presence of another person. If I would have been home, he would have ignored me.

I guess this is preparing me for parenthood, right?

Will we survive?

We staged our most aggressive attack today in waging The Battle of the Flea. Edgar and I walked over to our friendly Wal-Mart (here is where I totally take back my previous bashing of the Wal-Mart; I hadn't been in this one before and DAMN was it nice!) and picked up Adams Water-Based Flea & Tick Mist as well as Enforcer Flea Spray for Carpets and Furniture.

When we got home, Edgar sprayed the carpets and furniture while I kept the cat quarantined in the bathroom. The back of the spray can has all these warnings about not breathing the spray in, but they don't tell you why. WHAT COULD HAPPEN HERE? I've decided that we are going to have to put off trying to have a baby for an additional month in order to avoid growing one with extra limbs. Edgar covered his mouth and nose with his shirt while he was spraying, and I was in the bathroom with the cat, but I'm worried that some of it may have gotten in his system and his sperm are now toxic. I'd like to avoid the toxic sperm during the baby-making process. Not too much to ask, I assume? We kept the windows open during this whole process, so I'm hoping that at least provided enough air flow to keep it from hanging around too much.

The next step was misting the cat. He was not pleased, and Edgar and I have multiple scratches and lacerations to show for it. We tried to follow the directions on the back of the bottle, I promise. The first thing you are supposed to do is cover the cat's eyes and quickly and decisively spray his head and chest, then rub the product into his face. I think that I sprayed way too much when doing the chest spray, because while we were struggling with the rest of his body and trying to keep ourselves from bleeding out there were these thick ropes of bubbly drool coming out of his mouth. Like a rabid dog. Have you ever seen a cat drool? I DIDN'T THINK SO. Something was not right here.

So I was freaking the hell out, totally losing my mind, absolutely sure that he was going to die. I still am. No matter how much I wiped away, when we would move on to the rest of his body, it would start again. He wasn't freaking out about it, though, which I find kind of weird. He was only freaking out whenever we would spray his body again, recoiling at the mist hitting his fur.

We were supposed to wait five minutes after we sprayed him to dry him off and brush him. I was waiting in the bathroom with him, wanting to keep an eye on him in case he started foaming at the mouth again and convulsing. However, the chemicals in the air started to make me feel dizzy, so I had to go wait outside the apartment door for a few minutes to regain my head. Which is probably another reason why we should wait for a new egg in my cycle before trying to have a baby. The one that's floundering out there right now is probably drunkenly stumbling around one of my fallopian tubes wondering where the party is at.

Once I was able to come back in, I immediately googled the Adams mist to see if it can cause any adverse reactions in pets. I didn't find any horror stories in the first 10 pages of my Google search, so I have to assume that he's not going to die from the amount that had clearly gotten in his mouth to cause all of that drooling. Since the directions say to wait five minutes before towel drying the animal, and animals, by nature, can't go 5 minutes without licking themselves, I can only think that it can't be toxic for that reason alone. The manufacturers would know that animals would lick their fur and therefore get the product in their mouths. Right? RIGHT?

Edgar started vacuuming the apartment not long ago to pick up the hopefully dead fleas that the carpet and furniture spray should have rendered helpless, and as soon as he heard the vacuum, Fiyero immediately ran into the kitchen and got up on top of the cabinets, which is totally his thing. So he's still acting normally. But I'm still really worried about him. We already had plans today to leave this afternoon and head up to Simi Valley to visit my aunt, uncle, and cousins that live there. We have a yearly tradition of visiting this restaurant in Ventura for Octoberfest, and the plans were made weeks ago. I'm scared to leave him; I'm picturing coming home tomorrow and finding him dead from toxic poisoning from this flea spray, and he'll be alone during the whole horrifying death experience for what? For me to drink Spaten Oktoberfest and eat bratwurst while watching a 65 year old man wearing shorts and liederhosen dance around playing the accordian while teaching us German drinking cheers?

I can only hope that when we come back tomorrow I will be greated with a pile of shit on the bathroom floor and a hairball in the living room, as is his usual punishment for us to be ever so insolent as to leave him alone overnight. Let's pray for shit and hairballs, people.

To kill or not to kill

So I'm facing my first ethical dilemma as a [cat] parent.

Excluding the antibiotics that he was given after being snip-snipped and declawed, Fiyero has never been exposed to anything chemical. I know, I know, we're all exposed to chemicals everyday, be it from the items that we clean our houses with or the water that we drink. I get it. But I've never intentionally used anything chemical on him. He's all organic, if you will. Slap him on a shelf at Trader Joe's.

Edgar did some research online today and found some products that we can pick up at Wal-Mart that are supposed to be a special flea killing shampoo and a special spray that we can use on the furniture and the carpet to kill fleas as well. (I wish in that previous sentence that I could have said "pick up at Target," but unfortunately there is no Target anywhere close to where we live, thus, I am stuck with Wal-Mart). Ok, buying regular pet shampoo is one thing, but buying him a shampoo where it has things in it that are especially designed to kill, maim, and torture (maybe not in that order)? That worries me. I don't know how he will react to it, so I'm hesitant to use it. I don't want to slop some shampoo on him that's going to burn his fur and top layer of skin off of him. But I also really don't want to continue this vacuuming, washing, brushing routine either.

Don't get me wrong, I want these fleas gone. Those evil, racist, possibly sexist fleas have got to go. They seem intent on biting me at an exponential rate compare to how they bite Edgar, leading me to believe they don't like men or Mexican food. I know that in waging The Battle of the Flea that there will be casualties, but I'm not prepared to let Fiyero be collateral damage.

What's a [cat] mommy to do?

Stumble Upon Toolbar

And so in 2009, the war began

The Battle of the Flea began in earnest last night, wherein Edgar and I began our jihad on all that is unholy and bite-y. We began by stripping the bed and washing our sheets, a saga that will be continued at a later time in the narrative. Our next project was to vacuum the entire apartment top to bottom, carpets and furniture and pillows and anything that would stand still. Towards the end a burning smell started coming from the vacuum cleaner, and I'm pretty sure this is not a good sign, considering that this intensive vacuuming is supposed to happen every day.

I then laid towels down in the places that Fiyero likes to lounge at; the armchair and ottoman by our big picture window in the living room, along the wall under the stairs, on the right side of the couch, and along the edge of the loft where he likes to lay and look down into the dining room. Of course, he took that to mean "Don't lay here! This place is off limits!" and spent the evening lounging in other spots. That is, once he came down from the top of the cabinets in the kitchen after the vacuuming was done. So I probably have fleas on top of my kitchen cabinets. Awesome. And this morning, the towel under the stairs was all bunched up like he moved the thing out of the way so he could lay where he wanted last night. Thanks again, kitty cat.

I also had to brush him yesterday evening, which turned out to be a much more pleasant experience than I thought it would. I was thinking claws and teeth and hissing and death, but once he figured out that "Wow, it's like you're petting me! But you're not! And it's different! And I kinda like it!" he was actually very docile about it. The only problem was that he kept trying to angle himself so that I would get him with the brush a certain way, just like he would if I was petting him, so there was a lot of "Stop it! Stay! I'll pin you down! Why do you make everything so difficult for Mommy?" going on.

We decided to wait on giving him a bath until Saturday morning for two reasons. 1) It's been chilly in the evenings and we don't want him to stay damp all night. 2) We don't have cat shampoo and apparently you're not to use Herbal Essences on a cat? According to Edgar. Human shampoo = bad cat shampoo. Which I never would have thought if he hadn't told me. I'm a bad pet owner. But if it means that I can put off my imminent death by "carotid artery being slashed by kitty's hind claws" for a few more days, I'm totally willing to learn.

So, the bedsheets. Back to the bedsheets. Fiasco. FEE.ASS.CO.

I mentioned once a very long time ago that we have a space age washer and dryer from the future. The apartment complex threw it in with our rent when we moved in; the were almost at capacity and therefore couldn't really offer any move in specials, so they gave us the washer/dryer combo and a 42 inch flat screen LG LCD TV (which unfortunately stays when we go). When I say washer/dryer combo, I do not mean a stackable machine. I mean that you put your clothes in a front loading machine that then washes and dries the clothes ALL IN THE SAME COMPARTMENT. There is no moving of the clothes from a washer to a dryer, because THE WASHER IS THE DRYER. I know, right? The downside of this contraption is that the machine capacity is quite small, which means that unless you want to spend your entire life ironing you can't overload it, or bad things happen and puppies die. In addition to that, it's cycles take a very long time; we're talking upwards of three hours from beginning wash to dryer cool down. We've learned this quite well over the last month of living there. HOWEVER. Since the capacity is small and sheets are long, flowing objects that don't tumble and mix together very well, you get in the situation where the sheets kind of become this big ball with a core and an outer layer. I added extra time to the dry cycle because I knew this, however when I got the sheets out of the dryer at the end, I didn't bother to spread them out to make sure that they were dry. SILLY ME. Instead, I threw them on the bed and told Edgar, no, honey, sit back down, don't worry about it, we'll make it later when we're ready to go to bed. And then I put a load of throw blankets in the machine and we went about our business.

You see where this is going, right?

At around 10 we started to get ready for bed. I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth when I heard Edgar groan from the bedroom. THE SHEETS WEREN'T DRY. In that big ball of linen that I pulled from the machine, the part at the center had some large areas of fabric wherein one pillowcase and two large swaths of the flat sheet and fitted sheet had been crumpled together and were still damp. And since there was already another load in the middle of the wash cycle in the machine, we couldn't throw them back in to dry. While Edgar was all about taking a 10pm trip to Wal-Mart (are you insane?) to buy another set of sheets, I was not willing to go out like that.

Did I mention that we do not have another set of sheets? We bought our current sheets a few months ago. They were a necessity buy because our previous set of sheets had finally crapped out on us. They were old, and therefore comfortable, but they were also worn out, and one night during a particulary violent spasm in my sleep, my big toe RIPPED THROUGH THE SHEET. So those sheets got trashed in favor of the new ones. It's never really been an issue to us before to have a second set of sheets because we always wash them on weekend afternoons when we're not using them. BIG MISTAKE, AMANDA.

So after a lot of scrambling, I was able to find an old duvet cover, which we laid down on the matress, and we covered up with the feather duvet that we normally use. We had some dry blankets, but they hadn't been washed yet, so I didn't want to bring them back into the bedroom. THERE ARE SO MANY PROBLEMS HERE. I'm a burrower. I like blankets. I love blankets. I don't care if it's a 100 degree day, if I'm laying down watching TV on the couch or sleeping in bed, I NEED ME SOME BLANKETS. Normally at night, I've got the sheet, the duvet (that normally has a duvet cover, thus, two more extra layers of fabric), and my lovely penguin blanket that I stole from Edgar's mom a long, long time ago. Plus my personal heater that sleeps next to me. And often a second heater, recently rechristened Flea Boy, that likes to sleep on my feet or stretched out between my legs. But all those layers of comforting bedding were gone, and my little Flea Boy has been banished from the bedroom until The Battle of the Flea is won.

And we WILL win. Our will is stronger than that of the flea resistance. GIVE UP TO THE MACHINES, YOU DAMN FLEAS.

The Itchy & Scratchy Show

So. I've been researching how to get rid of these fleas.

Wait, hold on. I need to bitch for a moment about the fact that there are fleas in the first place. My cat has NEVER had fleas. Ever. However, I think that the people who lived in this apartment before we did had a pet that had fleas. Edgar found a short white hair the other day when he was vacuuming. Fiyero has long black hair. So there was pet hair that was not our pet hair. And that damn pet had fleas. And now I itch.

So. Back to how to get rid of fleas.

1. Vacuum carpet and furniture. Daily.

2. Give the cat a bath. And before you do that plan your funeral because you will not survive it.

3. Lay towels down in places your pet likes to lounge so that you can collect any fleas or eggs that fall off and get rid of them.

4. Brush your cat daily. Again, get yer funeral plans ready.

5. THROW THE CAT OUT THE WINDOW.

I can't take days like this

You ever have one of those days where you wake up and every fiber of your dog-ass tired being screams "Oh, Shit!"?

Yep, it's one of those days.

Nothing particularly horrible or life-altering has happened. I didn't forget to pay a bill or feed the cat or wipe my ass or anything like that. But I just feel it. I feel like the other shoe is about to drop. AND I DON'T KNOW WHY.

Edgar is getting sick. Is that it? He's been kind of congested the last few days and slept very restlessly last night. I, in turn, slept restlessly as well. Is that it? He called me this morning and told me he was nauseous. Maybe he's pregnant. Is that it? I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure as soon as he told me that my throat started hurting. Maybe that's it. Could it be the fact that it's supposed to rain today? Rain in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA? It happens. Rain that I'm totally not prepared for since my windshield wipers don't really work all that well, and by "don't really work all that well" I mean that they leave a wide swath of windshield RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY FACE completely untouched. Could it be that? Could it be that I have flea bites all over my body because my cat all of a sudden decided that OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD FLEAS WOULD BE SO MUCH FUN EVEN THOUGH I'VE NEVER HAD THEM EVER BUT I LIKE THE WAY THEY MAKE ME FEEL?

COULD IT BE THAT MY CAPS LOCK BUTTON SEEMS TO BE MALFUNCTIONING?

I don't know. Dark cloud of foreboding (and rain) = Amanda trying really hard to not die.

I do not handle stress very well lately. Ever since the huge debacle last year of Edgar losing his job, then me finding out that I was going to get laid off, to the money troubles to the living with his parents to the what seemed increasingly fruitless job searches, whenever anything bad happens I just expect everything to snowball completely out of control. The only saving grace I have is that the Colts did not make me want to cry at any time last night during their shellacking of the Titans. Dear Peyton Manning and Cute Mormom Rookie, My health thanks you. Sincerely, Amanda (She Who Is Trying Really Hard To Not Die).

As long as I get a new car out of it

During our house-warming gathering last night, Edgar and I learned a very interesting thing: that our cat is an attention whore. A fame-seeking, money-loving attention whore. We've raised a monster.

After hiding under our bed for the first hour that we had company over, he came out and started doing tricks for people. Jumping on laps, sticking his ass up in the air, rolling over on to his back to have his belly rubbed. He took to Mike, the significant other of one of Edgar's former co-workers, like a fish to water. I've never seen him latch on to a stranger that way as quickly as he did. It's like he was an ignored kid from a southern California beach community desperately crying out "Love me!" to anyone that would listen.

Next thing you know he'll be angling for a reality show on MTV and having lunch at the Ivy. Kids these days.

FYI

Last night while we were watching TV (because that's all we do anymore as slaves to the new season of TV on the DVR), we heard a watery "bleeecggggh" sound come from downstairs.

Yes, Fiyero ate his dinner way too fast and puked it all up in the dining room.

No, we hadn't bought Resolve yet.

You do the math.

It's Coming For You

I think the airports of the world have set out to screw with me. I just got a call from Edgar, and he informed me that his flight has been delayed. Again. It was already delayed 45 minutes, and now it is being delayed another hour. EFF YOU AMERICAN AIR. They've totally messed up my countdown.

The cat is not pleased.

He woke me up at 7:00 this morning (my day off work, of course) screeching "Where's my dad?" at me for about 10 minutes straight. He was standing on the bed, his face all up in my business, just meowing his little kitty heart out FOR TEN MINUTES. No amount of "Shut up!" "Go away" and "SHUT UP!" could appease him. I know where I rank.

Today was also my first experience cleaning the apartment. Some might say, "Hey, excuse me, you moved in three whole weeks ago and you haven't cleaned yet? That's gross." And I would say that they are exactly right. It's not, however, like we've been living in filth all this time. We're clean people, we clean up after ourselves. But this was like the straight-up, I-mean-business kind of cleaning. The lugging the vacuum up the stairs, scrubbing the bathtub, shining the windows kind of cleaning. It was kind of a rude awakening. When we were living with Edgar's parents, his mom did all of the cleaning. She LOVED to clean. If there was a linoleum floor, she was mopping it. Why deny the woman something she loved? I cleaned our room, but that was about it. My main form of entertainment was watching his mother try to keep up with picking up all the cat hair that Fiyero left behind everywhere he went. Here's a clue: IT CAN'T BE DONE. I miss the whole not cleaning part of life. Being domestic again has been somewhat of a rude awakening. The one thing I did miss, though, was the chasing of the cat with the vacuum cleaner.

The cat is not pleased.

I Remember Why I Got Married

Last night was an experience, to say the least. I never knew that Amanda Sleeping By Herself would be such a production. I'd like to consider it a dramedy.

Upon reaching my apartment and getting the whole pee fiasco as previously mentioned out of the way, my first order of business was dealing with the cat. He had something to say, and he was saying it in the way that I'm certain if it could be translated to human speak it would be "WOMAN! HEAR THIS! What the hell have you done with my Daddy?" There was about 10 solid minutes of him meowing at the top of his little kitty lungs at me, and considering the fact that kitty lungs are quite small (I know this to be true, we had to dissect a cat in Anatomy Class my junior year in high school), I have no idea how he managed to make that much sound. The sound, along with the constantly throwing his body to the floor in front of me with each step that I tried to take. It took a lot of convincing, but I finally got the idea through his thick kitty skull that his Daddy would not be coming home that night. At which point he decided firmly to ignore me and curled up, glaring daggers, on the dining room table for the rest of the evening.

When you're acutely aware that you are by yourself, when you have not lived by yourself in years, you become hyper-sensitive to noise that you hear. Noise that you would normally write off. Such as the front door of the neighbor's apartment slamming shut. All of a sudden you sit bolt upright with fear, "Was that my door? Did some one come in here? AM I ABOUT TO BE MURDERED WHILE I SIT HERE DRINKING CHARDONNAY AND EATING STARBURST?" The fact that we do not have a deadbolt or chain on our front door is now a constant worry on my mind, and will be until 6:00 pm on Friday. I kept creeping down the stairs from the loft to the front door and peering out the peephole to make sure some one was not trying to get in my front door when in reality the noise I heard was just a mouse walking by on the street outside of my code-needed-for-entry apartment building. That chardonnay probably wasn't helping the paranoia, either.

My brother-in-law called me around 8:00 to see how I was doing, which was greatly appreciated. Sure, it does nothing to combat the lonliness, but it was nice to know that someone cared. He even told me that if I needed anything at all to give him a call. Which is such a nice and generous and selfless thing to do, which made me realize that it's something I never would have thought to do for someone else. Ah, well, can't win 'em all.

On the plus side, my inability to sleep helped me watch 4 episodes of the backlog of classic Beverly Hills, 90210 episodes on the bedroom TiVo.

When it came time to sleep (which I feared would never come because, oh no! the back of the chairs from the dining room table aren't high enough to wedge under the front door handle!), the bed was looming large and scary. We have a long body pillow that I like to use when I'm sitting up in bed reading or watching TV, so I laid it length-wise on Edgar's side of the bed to simulate him actually being there. And the cat seemed to like that; he plopped himself down right in between my hip and the pillow like this was all totally normal and he had resigned himself to the fact that he would never see his Daddy again, at least not until 6:00 pm on Friday. Falling asleep was for me, of course, a lot harder. Body pillows do not snuggle or move or give off body heat or hold your hand or give you a kiss goodnight or save you from the scary monsters that are waiting for you to fall asleep so that they can bust through the flimsy ONE LOCK on your apartment door and murder you. I'm not sure what time I ultimately fell asleep, but I'm sure that it was not early because I felt like I could hardly hold my eyes open when the alarm clock went off this morning.

Luckily, my dear husband called me right after my alarm went off to tell me to get my ass out of bed. Does he know me, or does he know me? And apparently Fiyero hadn't quite forgotten about him, because he kept biting my elbow the whole time we were on the phone, and meowing "WOMAN! HEAR THIS! I want to talk to my Daddy, and I want to talk to him now!" He has priorities, and I am not one of them. I accept this.

Forty-five hours to go.

Stumble Upon Toolbar

One and Two, Oh What Shall I Do?

About 10 seconds after I walked in the door upon returning from work today the phone began ringing. Suspecting that it was my husand, who I miss LIKE HE WAS MY LEFT FOOT THAT GOT CUT OFF, I immediately answered it, despite the fact that I had to pee like a Triple Crown Racehorse. I held out on the phone as long as could, until after 10 minutes I had to blurt out "Please call me back in two minutes, I have to pee RIGHT NOW!"

I can't pee in front of my husband. I can't even pee on the phone with him for the possibility that he will hear me peeing. I can pee on the phone with my sister, my mom, my friend Jessica....I just can't do it in front of him.

I wish I could understand the ability of some couples to pee in front of one another. I wish I could understand the ability of some couples to even be able to *gasp* poop in front of one another. I just can't do it. My parents can do it. They can just leave the bathroom door wide open, doing their business and carrying on a conversation. I just can't do it. There are some things that just can't be done, and this is one of those things.

Edgar doesn't have that modesty. He'll pee with the door open, just to make me go "Oh, Edgar, really? Please!" and then laugh as I turn my back and run away. He hasn't crossed the line of doing the #2 with the door open though. He knows that will be the end of everything. It's not that I can't handle the fact that, oh, gee, my husband pees and poops. I know he does. I'll be the first person to walk in the room after he does and ask "Jeez, what died in your ass?" We have conversations about how many times he pooped that day, because I have met no other person that poops as many times a day as he does. Seriously, it's like every morning, every evening, and after every meal. It's mind boggling. I tell him about my pooping, too. But I just can't do it in front of him. It's gross. I've come to accept that fact that when we have children that they will not be born potty-trained, as much as I wish they would be, and that I will have to deal with the consequences of that. But I relate the adult peeing/pooping in front of one another conundrum to the same thing as when you walk in to a public restroom and some ignorant shit (pun not intended) hasn't flushed the toilet before you. WHAT IS SO HARD ABOUT THIS? DO YOU LEAVE IT LIKE THAT IN YOUR OWN HOME? Seeing another grown person's poop in the toilet makes me want to yak. Even if I love that person with all my heart, I find it hard not to be repulsed by the sight of their poop just hanging out in the toilet like "Oh, hey, you're here now, want to join the party?"

IT'S WRONG.

Which leads me to another issue, which is that cat. Fiyero. Oh, Fiyero. While I was in the kitchen today making dinner, I had the perfect sightline to see him in the bathroom. His litter box sits between the toilet and the sink, and I could see his little head and shoulders coming out from the front of the box while he sat in there and did whatever it was he was doing. Once he was done, instead of just walking out of the litter box like a normal cat, he jumped sideways up on to the toilet seat. To avoid having to walk in his litter box; to avoid having to walk on the litter that leaves him susceptible to walking in his own pee or poop. He's a cat. Is he seriously going to be sniffing his paws going "Oh, wow, this smells bad, I don't want this on my feet?" Well, little buddy, MOMMY DOESN'T LIKE TO SMELL IT EITHER, BUT I DEAL WITH IT. But no, you have to be a princess and jump all crazy-like up on to the toilet and in the process scatter kitty litter EVERYWHERE. Do you know how unpleasant it is to walk into the bathroom and step on litter with your bare feet? Of course not, you're a cat, you have paws. PAWS THAT WERE MADE TO WALK ON LITTER.

Like father, like son. I can't escape the poop and pee. I'm forever doomed.

An Open Letter

Dear Fiyero,

When you climb on top of my legs while I'm sleeping, and I subsequently kick you off the bed because I don't appreciate being immobilized, it does not mean that you should climb back on top of me in the exact spot. Nor does it mean that you should jump on your daddy's chest, because he'll kick you off too, and he'll mumble things in his funny sleepy voice that I can't quite understand but usually involves the word "fuck." We do have jobs, you know. Life's not full of naptime and sitting on the windowsill and having crazy cat crack attacks and having someone else clean up your poop, you know.

I'm just sayin'.

Love,
Mommy

Moving 2.0

After the more than ample amount of practice the weekend before last, the for-real for-real move of this past weekend was relatively easy and pain-free. "Pain-free" as in no major problems that could not be averted, not as in "free of physical pain." Or "free of mental anguish from the cost of moving." I'm still working on that.

We were able to pick the U-Haul up at 8:30, which was good. I didn't want to have to wait until after 10:30 as we did when we helped Edgar's parents move. At that point it's just already too late. So, anyways, the U-Haul. We drove it over to the storage unit and got everything loaded up. There was a frightening moment at the end because we had it completely filled up, and we still had to make a stop at our in-laws house to pick up our bed, TV, nightstand, and some boxes. It all worked out in the end, but not without a lot of frustration and rearranging.

First speed bump: crazy thieving storage unit. We paid for a full month for the storage unit on September 2nd. Our account was on automatic withdrawal, so we went ahead and let it go through because we assumed (apparently ridiculously incorrectly) that we would then be refunded for the remainder of the month once we vacated the storage unit, as is standard business practice. Apparently NOT for stupid QUALITY SELF STORAGE IN WEST COVINA. SO NOT QUALITY. DO NOT USE THEM. THEY ARE MEAN AND THEY STEAL YOUR MONEY AND WON'T GIVE YOU A REFUND AND THEN TALK TO YOU LIKE A CHILD WHEN YOU ASK THEM WHY NOT. Bitches. According to them it's all our fault because we needed to tell them 2 weeks in advance of the payment coming out that we would be leaving the storage unit this month. Um, ok, so I get that they needed time to remove us from their auto-payments. But why the eff can they not issue us a refund for the three and a half weeks that we're not using the unit? THIEVES!!!! I hate them.

I had to make a concious effort to calm myself down after that. I could tell that Edgar was getting annoyed that I was being pissy, and so to save us all the trouble I forced myself to chill out in the car on the way to his parent's house.

At his parents I had to suffer through the indignity of being a bad pet owner; for the sake of not letting Fiyero escape I had to once again lock him in the bathroom. Every time I would walk by the bathroom door or speak, I would hear this sad, patheitc, "merow!" come from inside the bathroom. And with it's high ceiling and tile, it would echo. I was in hell. He decided to make me suffer too, causing the car ride to Long Beach to be very uncomfortable. Fiyero far outgrew his kitty-carrier a long time ago; he's just ridiculously long. Sometimes when he stretches all the way out, it looks like he's as big as a dog. Anyways. Kitty-carrier-free cat is a roving cat. He started out the trip so well; he sat on the passenger seat and stared at me. As long as I kept petting him with my right hand and driving with my left, he was fine. But about 10 miles in to the trip he decided it was time to sit on my lap. Even that was ok, if not a little uncomfortable. But then he decided that the best place for him was not my lap, but he wasn't sure where to go. So he climbed up on my shoulder. Hind legs on my shoulder, front paws on the seat back, ass in my ear. After standing there for a minute, he tried to walk across the back of my shoulders. But instead of then climbing down on to the seat, he decided to lay down. THE CAT WAS LAYING DOWN ON THE BACK OF MY SHOULDERS WHILE I WAS TRYING TO DRIVE ON THE 605 FREEWAY. Not good. So not good. I was hunched over that steering wheel like an 80 year old Asian lady. We finally hit some traffic where I had to completely stop, so I was able to use both hands to get him off me. I put him back in the passenger seat, but he kept trying to walk onto my lap and get down by my feet with the pedals. Which of course is ridiculously dangerous, so I had to keep throwing him off my lap into the passenger seat. I think he was doing it just to annoy me, because once we were off the freeway he settled down again and was all, "Look at me, I'm so cute sitting here in the passenger seat with my tail curled around me and rubbing my paws. Don't you love me?" Oh, Fiyero.

Speed bump number two: unfortunately when we got to the apartment, the leasing office was closed. They have one person working on Saturday and she was out to lunch. So after loitering outside the building for 45 minutes, we were finally able to get in, sign our lease, and get our keys. The actual moving in was pretty easy. We had a big appliance dolly from UHaul for the big furniture and another smaller dolly that I borrowed from work to move boxes. I think it took around four hours for us to move everything in to the apartment. It probably could have taken less time but at the end we were all being lazy and not really lifting anything without the help of one of the dollies. Oh well, we were still done much faster than we were last week.

Speed bump number three: parking ticket! Oopsy. All of the street parking around our building is metered. The meter on my mother-in-law's car was empty for about 15 minutes, and she got a ticket. We hadn't seen a meter reader the entire day. We had someone downstairs with the UHaul and the cars and a roll of quarters at all times. But for the last 15 minutes before she left, while she was upstairs saying goodbye, the reader magically appeared and gave her a ticket. Figures.

We returned the UHaul after that, not without some drama. Edgar just may have clipped a stopped bus that he was going around on Long Beach Boulevard. Maaaaaaybe. He doesn't know, I couldn't tell, the bus driver didn't run out yelling at him, so it's probably ok. Proooooooobably.

Dinner was quite the adventure. Since we didn't have any food yet, we stopped at a Carl's Jr. to eat. Oh my, Carl's Jr. I was heading to the restroom to wash my hands before we ate, when I was abruptly stopped by a meter on the door, needing to insert a quarter in order to open the door. According to Edgar, this was not a good sign. Apparently the pay locks are on the door to keep homeless junkies from coming in and shooting up in the bathroom (this was all very comforting on my first evening in a new city in a restaurant a few blocks from my new place, as you can imagine). Anyways, I already wasted all of my quarters on the aforementioned parking meters, so the whole hand-washing thing ended up being a non-starter.

We were able to get a lot of our packing done on the first night after we got back from dinner. This is where I sustained by most egregious injury of the weekend. I had climbed up on top of the kitchen counter to put some vases on top of a cabinet, and when I was trying to get back down I slipped and jammed the top of my knee against one of the knobs on the lower cabinets. Within the hour I had a gold-ball sized lump and a huge purple bruise in the same spot. Luckily by now the swelling has gone down and the bruise is getting that yellowish look, so I think I'll get to keep the leg. No permanent damage done. It still hurts though :(

Good news: the cat didn't freak out. He actually didn't even close himself up like a basket case as he did last week while we were unpacking. He was out playing with things, running up and down the stairs to the loft, and generally just having a good time. It was kind of amazing how quickly he adapted. I think he recognized all of our old furniture and realized "Ok, this is home, I'm safe here." Thank goodness.

Sunday was an interesting day. We got up at 7 am. The only reason we got up that early was because out DirecTV installation appointment was scheduled in the 8am-12pm window. We wanted to be able to eat breakfast and shower before he got there. Which turned out to be totally unnecessary since he didn't show up until 12:30. Thanks, DirecTV subcontractor. I could have slept in. (On another note, I was able to walk to a Denny's down the street to get us pancakes for breakfast, which was kind of awesome).

DirecTV guy was there for FIVE HOURS. Normally, installation takes about two hours at the most. They were having problems activating the new receiver that we ordered from them. It took 4 people on the phone and 3 hours to figure out that it was because the NFL Sunday Ticket package on the account was expired, so they couldn't activate anything new. Which is awesome, since we have already told DirecTV about four times since we ordered our service that we wanted the package on our account to be renewed. THANKS FOR WASTING THREE HOURS OF MY LIFE. Then came the lovely fact that the receiver they were trying to activate was broken, and we had to wait for the installer's coworker to bring us a good one. Stellar.

After that fiasco came the Verizon fiasco. I was trying to set up our internet service but the installation wouldn't complete. I called Verizon and they told me after running some tests that there was a problem with the line and they would have to have their central office run some tests and if that didn't work they would have to send a technician out. Which royally pissed me off. Don't send me an e-mail on 9/4/09 saying "Congratulations! Your internet service is ready!" if it is NOT READY. And certainly do not tell me that if you have to send a technician out that you can't tell me today what day it will be and that you can't come after 6pm when I'm home from work. YOU are the ones that fucked up and I will not be taking unpaid time off from work in order for you to fix the problem. I eventually got to speak with a supervisor who told me after I had to do a lot of yelling that they could have some one come out after 6 pm, but I would have to call the next day to reschedule the appointment that he was going to give me to the 6 pm hour. Um, excuse me? You want to schedule me your stupid four hour window appointment for a time that you know I can't do and make me call back to reschedule it for after 6 o'clock? If you can reschedule an appointment to 6 o'clock, you can schedule an appointment for 6 o'clock. And this guy was a supervisor. Whatever. Eventually this culminated in me screaming at the guy to cancel my service. Which he of course stated that he could not do because I would have to speak with the cancellation department and they were closed. FUCK YOU VERIZON.

I don't like being mean. I used to do customer service and I hated it when people would scream and yell at me about something that I could not change. But these people were just screwing with me. If you're a supervisor, you have the power to do things that regular reps can't. Don't tell me that you can't do something. Give me a resolution. I know the tricks that you have up your sleeve and I'm not going to sit there and be walked over.

I ended up hanging up on the guy. I called back today to cancel the service, and I was told that they've escalated the issue and will have a resolution by tomorrow. I still wanted to cancel, but unfortunately, my phone battery died in the middle of the converstaion. Of course. Stellar, once again. I just can't seem to get it together with Verizon! I'm giving them one more chance when I call back this evening. If they have an answer for me, and can send a technician out this Friday when I am off from work, I won't cancel it. Anything else, bye-bye Verizon. I hate them. They make me miserable. I just want the internet at home!! I hate only having access to it from my office! Ugh.

The Move *dum dum dum*

So the wonderful aforementioned move happened this weekend. And if by "wonderful" I mean "totally awful and painful," then yes, it was wonderful.

Since the UHaul wasn't available to be picked up until 10:30, we decided to start out by making one trip to the apartment to move smaller things in our cars: clothes from the closet, random stuff that didn't make it into boxes, and a truckload of boxes by the courtesy of Edgar's best friend, who has a big truck and was able to help us until 3:00. So far so good. Besides a lot of sweat and the annoyance of clothes falling off of hangers and hangers falling off of clothes as we carried armfuls from the closet to the car, then in turn from the car to the closet, there was no big problem other than the cat. He was not pleased at all the hub-bub and tried to decapitate me with his hind claws when I finally trapped him to lock him up in the bathroom so that he couldn't escape out of the front door.

The first trip was completed and unloaded by around 10:00, so we had a little bit of time to relax before we picked up the UHaul. Edgar's brother and best friend headed back to the apartment to pack another load of boxes into his truck while we went with his mother to pick up the UHaul. By the time we got back the load of boxes was ready to go in the truck and we started packing up the UHaul. This is where things started to fall apart.

If you've been keeping count, thus far there have been two huge-ass loads of boxes packed into our friend's truck. One would think, for a simple two bedroom apartment, that there couldn't be much more. This is where you'd be wrong. We still had about 20 boxes that had to be loaded in to the UHaul. My mother-in-law is a pack rat of the worst kind, because she insists that she's not a pack rat. "But I did throw stuff away!" "But we've lived here for 12 years, that's a lot of things over that time!" "But some of this stuff is the kids'!". Etcetera, ad nauseum. A rebuttal: Throwing away an old tube of lipstick and a VHS tape is not "throwing stuff away." Just because you accumulate things over 12 years does not mean that you need to keep them when they become obsolete *ahem VCR*, broken *ahem bookshelf*, or are replaced *ahem 3 food processors*. If your 33 year old sons who have moved out (not counting our brief stay with them--all of The Hubby's things are in storage save his clothes and his PS3) have not come back to claim any of those items in the years since they have moved out, they obviously don't need it anymore and you should throw it away. Especially when you ask them if they want it and they specifically say "No, throw it away." That is not code for putting it back where you found it. I took a picture of the huge pile of boxes and once i find my USB cord I will upload a picture for your viewing pleasure.

Anyways, once the boxes are done, I bring the ugly truth front and center and tell the guys (Edgar, his brother, and his friend) that we need to move the piano. If we wait until the end to do it, everyone's muscles will already be shot and there will be no way to get it done. Heaviest stuff done first, then on to the lighter lifting. Oh, the piano. It's an upright with a leg that's falling off. So there's that. We got it out the door on to the landing easily enough, but then there was the issue of getting it down the stairs. Yes, we are on the second floor. The guys did make a valiant effort, I'll give them that. They had the thing rigged up on a dolly, prepared to ease it down one step at a time with two of them standing in the backfield with ropes pulling in the opposite direction for tension. It seemed like a good plan. Until the first step, were it became abundantly clear that there was no way in hell that that piano was going to make it down those steps in one piece. Back to the drawing board, kiddos. Needless to say the piano went back inside and is still there as I write this. We finally convinced my mother-in-law that she needs to hire professional piano movers, something that she had insisted that we wouldn't need. Until the the time she heard the horrible sound the piano made as it went down that first step. My only question left is how they got the damn thing up those stairs in the first place.

The Piano Incident, as it will forever be known, ate up about 45 minutes of our precious moving time. I say 'precious' because we only had Edgar's friend until 3:00 and the UHaul had to be turned in at 6:30. And the more we started to move other things, the more it became clear to us that we had no chance in hell of finishing anywhere in that timeframe. And that's when my mother-in-law and brother-in-law decided to go pick up a couple of guys at Home Depot. Antonio and Angelino, wherever you are now.......you are my heroes. Dear Lord, these guys kicked that apartment's ass. They walked in the door, asked where they should start, and they didn't stop until it was over. I think that I now firmly come down on the side of supporting illegal immigration.

Of course, that doesn't mean that the day wasn't still without hiccups. The first was the UHaul itself. We ordered the 24 or 27 foot UHaul, I'm not sure which. Either way, on the UHaul website, it gives the description that it's good for a place with 3-4 bedrooms. Thanks to the packrat tendencies of my mother-in-law as previously described, that 2 bedroom apartment easily filled that UHaul to bursting. Of course, with the guys just dropping stuff in the UHaul and going back for another load of funiture, they were only using the horizontal space, not the vertical space available. I eventually had to step in and save them, organizing and piling things to make it all fit. I'm quite proud of myself. I do owe it all to my dad though, that man is the Packing Master (hmmm, that sounds dirty, must come up with a different description). He can pack an entire room into a suitcase, walls and all. I happily called him later and told him that he did, in fact, teach me something in my 25 years of life; he got a good laugh out of it.

Another thing that was not so good: the state of the furniture once we got it to the house. No one was brilliant enough to think to use furniture pads or blankets, so a lot of the furniture had chips and nicks. Maybe even a couple of gashes. All courtesy of the eleventy-billion speed bumps in their new neighborhood.

Of course, the bright, shining spot of badness for the day had all to do with the cat. Once we were done moving stuff out of the apartment, I went to get him out of the bathroom to stow him in the car and transport him to the new house. When I opened the bathroom door, my nostrils received the putrid greeting of cat poo. Fiyero, while sometimes being a very loving cat, also has a spiteful streak. When he's pissed off at us, he retaliates by crapping outside of his litter box. Right on the floor next to it. As in "I want you to know that I know where my litter box is and what I'm supposed to do there, but I'm doing it on the floor because I think you deserve it." (By the way, this was the second surprise that he left us that day. When we moved the couch away from the wall, we were both equally amazed and disgusted to find a hairball stuck to the wall behind the couch. He likes to lay on the back of the couch, and apparently one day, probably a couple months ago juding by the texture of it, he had a hairball while laying there and just turned his head and spewed it in the tiny space between the couch and the wall). After I cleaned the poop up, I was finally able to get ahold of him. He fought me all the way down to the car. I had to carry him myself, as he outgrew his kitty carrier long, long ago. Once inside the car, he continued to fight me while I grapsed on to him until all of the doors were closed. I finally let him go, at which point he collapses in my lap, looks at me with a pathetic look in his eyes, and begins to pant. I have never seen another cat pant, and I've only seen him do it once before, on a car ride as well. But he was going whole hog this time. He even was making noise. He sounded like a dog about twice his size. So dramatic. When I got him to the new house, it was straight to the bathroom again for him, since we had to move all of the furniture in. He learned how to exact new torture on me at this point. I closed the door to the bathroom, walked to the kitchen to get a bowl of water for him (panting crybaby), but when I opened the door to the bathroom to give it to him.....he was gone. Checked the bathtub, not there. Checked behind the toilet, not there. Even opened the cabinet under the sink, not there either. I started freaking out. How did he get out of here? Did he sneak out the door just before I closed it? Did he become invisible? Did he magically learn how to walk through walls? Luckily, my cat did not turn all magic on me; Edgar found him pressed against the wall crouching in fear in the 6-inch space between the floor and the bottom of the cabinet. He didn't come out of there until after midnight that night. Even after all of the moving was done and everyone else had left and the house was quiet, he still stayed there. We slept with out bedroom door open that night so that he could come in and be with us (this is normally not an option as he likes to think that feet that move under the covers are monsters and need to be pounced on and bitten). Come into be with us he surely did, jumping on my stomach and walking all over us repeatedly.

We also 'lost' the cat again on Sunday. He was truly making a case for being magically magical. We couldn't find him for hours, but we eventually realized that he was inside of this huge overstuffed armchair. Not under it. Inside of it. The lining on the bottom had ripped in transit, and he realized this at some point. He got through the lining and up in to the actual structure of the chair. And would not come out. We finally had to tip the the chair backwards, me almost in tears because I was sure that we would end up breaking his neck somehow, to shake him out, then put the chair up against the wall so he couldn't climb back in. He was not pleased. He then retreated under my in-laws bed for the rest of the day and didn't come out until around 6 pm. He seemed in better spirits this morning, so hopefully we won't have anymore of the "Disappearing Cat" act.

All drama aside, we're settling nicely into the new place. It was a joy to take a shower this morning in a bathroom that wasn't stifling hot, and to be able to blow dry my hair and not be sweating buckets when I was finished. It was nice to sleep with the wonderful central air keeping me cool. It was nice to be in a quiet neighborhood where there aren't annoying children and dogs making noise at all hours (wow, I sounded about 60 there). It was nice to have an ice-maker in the freezer, not crappy ice cube trays. It's actually a really nice place. I wouldn't mind having a place like that in a few years when Edgar and I have kids.

So that was moving day. And I get to do it all again in two weeks. Oh, the joy.

Uh oh, Time to Move

Yay, it's Friday! Except I'm really not looking forward to this weekend :(

Edgar and I are currently living with his parents due to the unfortunate circumstance of us both being out of work at that same time. Now that we're both employed again, we've found our own place, but it's unfortunately not going to be ready for another two weeks. And, for our own bad luck, his parents are moving this weekend. So that will be two moves in two weeks for us, and for that I am not very happy.

Not that the place his parents (and, by extension, us) live in right now is a palace. It's a two bedroom apartment in an old complex that is full of loud children and loud dogs, as well as an increasingly annoying neighbor who can't seem to talk in anything other than a yell and has a cat named "Meow Meow" that she is constantly losing. And living in the San Gabriel Valley without central air conditioning this summer has been pure hell.

If anything, at least we'll get a two week jump on the central air. They'll still be in the valley but that central air will be a life saver considering what temperatures around here are supposed to do over the next week. It won't be needed as much at our new place that we'll be moving into in a few weeks since we'll be living near the beach, but it's always nice to have it when you need it (for those of you that are not familiar with Southern California, inland valleys tend to run about 20 degrees hotter during the day than the beaches). At the current place we're at, there is a wall unit AC in the living room, but as soon as you take two steps into the hallway to the bedrooms or the kitchen it's like climbing inside an oven. The bathroom gets so hot that you can hardly breathe, but since we're living with my mother- and father-in-law I'm not exactly going to leave the bathroom door open to air out while I'm in the shower and getting ready in the morning. My mother-in-law is also an old school Mexican lady who will just sit in the heat and not do anything about it, so she'll never turn the AC on herself. Edgar and I will come back from the movies on a weekend afternoon into the inferno, where the apartment will be 100 degrees inside, she'll be sweating up a storm, compounded by her hot flashes, trying to cool off using a paper fan that she's waving in front of her face. Unless you say "Hey, it's hot! Let's turn on the AC," she'll just sit and suffer.

I am happy for my in-laws, though, because they've been living in that apartment for almost 20 years and they're finally going to be moving into an actual house. They're still renting, but it's better than being stuck in that apartment. It would just be nicer if their move wasn't happening until after ours. Or maybe I'm just jealous because I'm really excited for my and The Hubby's new apartment and wish the move was for us to go there now, instead of making a stopover (albeit brief) in another place that's not ours.

Or maybe I'm just lazy and the idea of physical labor pains me.
